City Council

The City of Afton operates under the mayor-council form of government. The Council consists of five Council members at large for staggered terms of four years. The mayor is elected for a term of twocitycouncil years.

Your City Council meets on the second Tuesday each month at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall. All meetings are
open to the public and you are cordially invited to attend.

Michelle Burger
Michelle (Bakerink) Burger is a Creston native and graduated from Creston High school in 1985.  She migrated to Afton in 1986, when she married Afton local, Jeff Burger.  They have one daughter, Devon, who graduted from East Union.  They spend their free time traveling and spending time with Devon and family.

Michelle works at J & J Plumbing and Heating in Creston, the family owned business.  Michelle is the Office Manager and she enjoys her job because there is much opportunity to interact with customers.

Michelle decided to run for Mayor. Her motives included the people in Afton and her desire to improve the quality of life for everyone in Afton.  About being elected, Michelle says, “I’m excited and overwhelmed, but I know that I will be welcomed and supported.  I am open to ideas and suggestions and honored to have a hand in the interests of our community.”

Dave Cunningham
Dave grew up around the Afton area and graduated from East Union High School in 1970. He has worked for and became part owner in Creston Mobile since 1970. He married Connie Booth in 1973, they have 3 children, twins Adam and Amber & youngest Aric, and several grandchildren.

Dave got interested in City business when he was involved with the Afton Jaycees & Afton Betterment Club. One of his projects was building the restroom in the City park and the Afton Ball Complex.

Dave has been on the City council for four 5-four year terms. Some of the accomplishments since he has been on the council are some street & sewer projects, turned the water over to SIRWA, the electric to Keith Brown Electric, down to one street employee from 4, and 1 full time police officers.

Dave’s motto is to treat people the way he would like to be treated and vote on items that will benefit the people of Afton, and last but not least, not to overspend the budget.

Jeff Burger
Jeff grew up in Afton and graduated from East Union High in 1983.  He married Michelle Bakerink of Creston in 1986.  They have one daughter, Devon, who graduated from East Union Schools.

Jeff partnered with his father-in-law in 1998 and they co-own and operate J & J Plumbing and Heating in Creston.  Jeff also served as Afton Lions Club president during 2004-2005.
Jeff’s interest in the Afton City Council spurred from his involvement with the Afton Lions.  Jeff and Michelle choose Afton as their home because they love the people and personality of our small town.  During his term with the City Council, Jeff hopes to continue community improvement and quality of life.  He hopes to represent the people of Afton and their desires for Afton’s future.

Sherry Parrott
Sherry was born in Clearfield and raised in Creston where she graduated high school in 1965. She and husband, Monte, a native of Afton, moved here 24 years ago. They have 4 children and 8 grandchildren. Sherry worked for Green Valley Area Education Agency for 34 years, retiring in 2010. She ran for a vacant council seat 12 years ago, and and was elected for her 4th four year term. Sherry cares about Afton and it’s growth and keeping our town viable for the future. She enjoys serving the community and hopes to continue for several more terms.

Mary Hill
Mary is the newest member of the City Council appointed in November 2008 by the council to fill a vacated seat.

Mary was born and raised in Afton, graduating from East Union High School in 1970.  After raising her family south of Thayer and living away for a few years, she returned to town in 1990.  She worked at Heat Tech for four years and then received AA from SWCC and her BA from Simpson College in English Education.  She taught high school English at Diagonal, Murray, and East Union before deciding to work from her home, providing day care and performing contract services for the Afton Star Enterprise of which she is now the owner.

Mary and her husband, Wayne, have eight children and six grandchildren. Her desire in serving on the council is to promote a clean, safe, and fair town with plenty of housing and business opportunities and recreational activities for all ages.

Cindy Williams
Cindy was born in Creston in 1953 and graduated from East Union in 1971. She has taught science, psychology and biology at Murray schools for several years. Prior to that she substitute taught for eleven years in all subject areas and GED for six years through DMACC. Cindy and husband, Mark have one son, Ryan and 2 grandchildren, Alyssa & Zander. She moved back to Afton because she grew up here and knew it was a great place to live. Cindy has the city’s best interest at heart.
